Reporting to: Technical Centre Manager
Job Purpose:
Test & Development Technician to support our growing portfolio of driveline testing projects. You will have a strong background in mechanical and electrical test installation, rotating machines and test rig preparation. Initially supporting the building of the test capability for Hewland to enable the development and qualification of new products manufactured by Hewland and customers.
Core Requirements:
- Background in automotive/aerospace development environment
- Strong mechanical fitting skills with experience in rotational machinery such as test rigs, Jig and fixtures, transmissions, axles, electric motors, engines, etc.
- Working Knowledge/Experience of system or component testing on test rigs preferably transmissions or electric motors.
- Strong metalworking skills and ability to use test workshop equipment (lathe, milling machine, pillar drill, welder etc.).
- Knowledge of Instrumentation, sensors, data acquisition equipment and powertrain test cells.
- Capable of working to tight deadlines.
- Excellent IT, Verbal and Written communication skills
- Driving licence
- Logical and structured thought process with an ability to problem-solve: flexibility to tackle unfamiliar tasks with limited guidance or supervision.
- Familiarity with engineering drawings.
- Understand and adhere to strict health and safety guidelines.
- Ability to integrate and work well within a small team.
- Able to maintain good housekeeping of facilities and workshops
- Experience of building and stripping transmissions or other rotational machinery.
- Experience of test rig calibration processes.
- Experience of transmission inspection and measurement.
- Working knowledge of systems including compressed air, ventilation, heating, powertrain test rigs, air conditioning, fire suppression and alarm systems
Main Activities/tasks:
- We are looking for a confident and competent person with a strong background in mechanical fitting, electric machine and transmission systems or rotational machinery.
- Working closely with the other members of the team, your role will be to prepare, install and commission test components in readiness for test within the Hewland Technology facility.
- Your everyday tasks will include:
- Fit transmissions, Electric motors, adaptors and driveline components to test rigs.
- Fabricate brackets or make up simple test stands as required.
- Ensure all fitting work is completed to strict health and safety standards.
- Liaise with technicians, engineers and managers working on test programs.
- Support in the development and setup of test facilities to suit electrified powertrain development needs
- Operate tests (if skill level and training is to the correct level) to support objectives of the driveline development programmes
Since the new facility is in the process of being created, there will be a requirement to support the general maintenance, repair and development of the test space, assembly workshop and office spaces which may require the following activities to be performed:-
- Perform repairs, alterations and installations as required
- Conduct regular inspections and ensure preventative measures are undertaken
- Liaise with subcontractors and coordinate their activities ensuring work is done properly
- Create a safe working environment through good working practices and use of safe systems of work
- Fault identification and diagnosis as required
- Maintain records of inspections and work completed
- Interpret construction and installation drawings and specifications
- Support facility upgrade activities
- Fabrication/welding/machining of new test structures to support engineering projects and test rig installations
